I think I have missed only one day. The weekends are the hardest,  which in sure it is for most keeping a food journal.  I've thrown some pictures of my journal that one of my staff members volunteered to make for me...it's awesome!  </p>
<p dir=ltr>In other news I started at FitElite, the CrossFit box here! I'm just going though the essentials right now,  but I'm very excited for something new and challenging. ..and hopefully I'll meet some new people along the way! More on this later! </p>

<p>January is over and I successfully accomplished my goal for the month! I kept an accurate, up to date fitness journal! Having this journal made me really see how much I have been neglecting running in these cold months. In fact this morning I had great intentions to go running, I even made it out the door, but the 5 degree weather and a wind chill of -15 degrees made that decision the joke of the day. I made it 20 minutes out there and couldn't feel a thing when I got inside.</p>
<p>On to my February goal...keep a daily food journal! People who know me have asked why I am doing this, I don't necessarily need to lose weight, but it is really more in preparation for marathon season this summer. After my first marathon this past October I realized I took my diet and nutrition a little too lightly. I need to fuel it properly if I expect it to run 26.2 in a respectable manner! One of my staff members offered to put a notebook together for me, so I supplied her with a fun cover and colorful paper, it should be done tomorrow! It is nothing fancy, but it will be a fun colored book, which will make journaling more fun right? I'll be sure to post a picture when I get the final product. </p>
<p>PS this is my first post from my phone so not sure how these pictures will show up in the post. We are still on the hunt for a computer, we had an HP with the newest Windows, but it was way to complicated to use, so we returned it. Any suggestions?</p>

And what do you know J broke camera #2 of the year (I broke it once too, yes that is three breaks in one year)! Whoa wait back up! What am I celebrating you ask? My new job! Not just a <i>job</i>, but a <i>career</i> job! Yesterday I was offered the position of Health and Fitness Coordinator at a local university! I am beyond excited to begin my new journey, but am saddened to leave my clients/members/friends at the gym where I currently work.<br />

I haven't made any mention of this new position for a number of reason...<br />

1. It happened extremely quickly! They found out they needed a new coordinator last Monday, I sent my resume last Tuesday, given an interview this Tuesday and got the offer yesterday. Yes, that is <i>fast</i>! Since it was such a short timeline and the school year is starting up here soon, I am considered an emergency hire and will have to reapply next year. Pressures on!<br />

2. It is my first career job, not just an hourly paid job, so I plan to keep it off of the blog, except for maybe sharing a few highlights. <br />

3. I have been actively looking for a number of months now, and I didn't want to officially announce it until I knew I had something secured for sure. <br />

I will be starting up right away this up coming Monday....talk about being thrown in the fire! Wish me luck :)<br />

The Kodiak Cakes are supposed to be really good, so I can't wait to try those. <br />

J was really excited to see the Hawaiian Punch Freezer Bars in the package. Gnocchi is delish! Nutrition and dieting is all a mental thing, it's all about discipline and control, qualities that many of us (myself included) struggle to consistently demonstrate. Nutrition periodization is all about changing out old school focus of "how many calories should I eat" to the new school way of thinking, "eat to train, don't train to eat". I will be the first to admit that I workout so I can enjoy an extra scoop of ice cream on some days. But this is where I continually hop back on the train, each time I find myself straying from the tracks, I hop back on an refocus on food as fuel rather than a reward or treat. Food should not be thought of as a reward or an enemy, rather an ally to achieve health, fitness and performance goals. More and more I realize how my diet affects my marathon training, both in fueling and recovery. <br />
<br />
Put more straight forward, our nutrition plans should support the body's energy needs associated with the different exercise volume and intensity variables throughout our training year to encourage positive physiological responses. Sounds scientific huh? For me when I think about it in these terms it makes complete sense to me, it's when I start thinking of food as just an object that I lose discipline and focus on what food is really for. Although most of us don't, we should be spending as much time and energy in planning and preparing our nutrition plan as we do our exercise plan. <br />
<br />
Nutrition plans can and should be used for any individual that is active. The type of nutrition plan you should use may depend more on what type of athlete and how serious you are about your training. In an upcoming post in this series I will share with you the quantitative and qualitative approaches to nutrition periodization.<br />

Yes that is three bags of food. No, it is not going to be put away in my refrigerator. It is all going into the trash can :( When we came home Tuesday we found out that our refrigerator stopped working! Luckily it is the apartment's and not outs, so we didn't have to pay out of pocket to get a new one, but we did have to pay out of pocket to restock the refrigerator. Thankfully I tried to use as much of the food in there as possible before we left, so it wasn't totally full, but there was at least $150 worth of meat, veggies, fruit and condiments in there. The worst part...the condiments....it took me about a year to build up a good solid arsenal of condiments. <b><span style="font-size: large;">Thursday</span></b> I took off, I'm not sure why I thought I would be ready to take on the world full force after the 4th of July. I don't do well with little amounts of sleep! <b><span style="font-size: large;">Friday</span></b> was another story, my RB and I went out for 10 miles! It took us 1:40, but that included a couple short walking breaks, a bathroom break and a pit stop at Kwik Trip for some liquids, so we were cruising while we were actually running. We were able to beat most of the heat, but it was 73 degrees when we started at 6:30 am...and it felt cool (incredibly weird for WI)! <b><span style="font-size: large;">Saturday</span></b> I led my work running group (we had eight people this week!), so I got back-to-back higher mileage days, which felt great to do. I would like to keep doing back-to-back days like this, with a long and medium distance run, I think it would be good in preparing my legs for the marathon in October. I took the group on a three mile loop, then a couple wanted to go more so we ended up with a total of <i>7 miles</i> in 1:14, a slower pace but it felt just right for my legs. After the run I did a <i>30 minute "beach body" lift</i>, yes that's what we call it at work when all you do is work your upper body. </div>

It was painful to finish the last few reps for each body part, but I felt good after finishing! At 9:30 pm J was going to go workout, but wasn't feeling his traditional gym workout and asked if I wanted to go play <i>tennis</i> with him... of course! This is the first time we have played together in a few years, last time he got frustrated because he had no finesse and the ball would go flying sky high. But all of his Wimbeldon watching must have taught him something, because we were able to play a respectable game! It's a different brand than I had before (old- Nikon, new- Olympus VR 340), but it's an upgrade. This baby has way better zoom, mega pixels and other features than my old Nikon did. So far I'm happy with it! </div>

After preparing the cake according to the box directions (let it cool), put the cake into a large bowl. Add the frosting and mix with your hands, coating all the cake until moist. Form small balls with you hands. While creating the balls, melt almond bark in a double boiler. Coat cake balls in the almond bark, place on wax paper and stick a popsicle stick (or any type of stick) into the center of each ball. Let the balls cool and harden in the refrigerator once all are coated. Makes about 24 depending on the size. </div>

This is a product I love! It was actually introduced to me by my dad. I haven't tried the grape fruit flavor though, so I was happy to see a new flavor...delish! I've heard a number of bloggers rave about the new Uber line of Larabar, so I was happy to test them out. Brittnye sent me two flavors, apply turnover and cherry cobbler. I'm not much of a cherry fan so I spread the love to someone else, but I liked the apple flavored one. She mentioned that she wasn't a huge fan of Larabars because of the texture and flavor, I partially agree with her. I probably wouldn't buy them for myself, but finding one in a Foodie Penpal box every now and again is a nice surprise :) </div>

Today marks the first day of official <a href="http://www.uwec.edu/recreation/WYSP/">WYSP</a> activities! For those of you who don't know what WYSP is, it is a free, summer sports camp that is put on by UW-Eau Claire in an effort to teach children how to stay active through various sports and learn a little about health education. The camp, funded through various sponsors and grants, provides a breakfast and a lunch for all 430 kids (this years number). For some children this is their summer school...they take an instructional course most of the day and join us for meals and a little bit of the first period. </div>

This is my summer job! I will still be training over at my gym, but WYSP will be my main focus for the next month. As a former college basketball player I was asked two years ago to be their basketball professional staff, who taught the different age groups (ages 10-16) about the game of basketball and how to play it. </div>

Today is just counselor and instructor training from 8am-5pm. But our first day with the kids starts tomorrow! Monday through Friday (minus the holiday weekend), 8am-3pm I will be instructing basketball at camp...outside! Talk about loving my life! There are definitely some frustrating moments as the instructor, but knowing how much it means to the kids and how much of an impact you have on their lives and summer make it so worth the while! </div>

This time the topic will be coming from my Marathon Training book! I loved reading this book, as a soon to be first time marathon runner, I soaked up every bit of information from this text. </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Training Runs </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span><br />
A good training program will take into account the following three factors:<br />
<br />
1. Consistent, easy running for months at a time; a solid base of running <i>cannot</i> be underestimated!<br />
2. Important of the long run. Without constant extended runs between 120-180 minutes, a runner will most likely not succeed at the marathon distance.<br />
3. Relatively speaking, fast running is not important. Faster running should be reserved for those who have been running 25 miles a week for at least 2-3 months, rather than novices. <br />
<br />
With these three keys in mind, lets take a look at the three distances of training runs...<br />
<br />
<b>Short-Distance Run</b><br />
A short distance run is typically between 2 and 4 miles or 20 to 40 minutes. During these runs muscles learn to more <i>efficiently process oxygen and gain strength</i>. Short runs can be used for rest and recovery depending on your level of fitness and how far into your training you are. In general, each week should include 2 to 3 easy, short runs.<br />
<br />
<b>Medium-Distance Run</b><br />
A medium distance run is between 4 and 11 miles or 40 to 90 minutes. Once runs get beyond 90 minutes the body starts to deplete energy stores, so it is best to save these more demanding efforts for the long run. A medium run is best measured by time for novices, since it usually takes a novice longer to run a mid-distance run than an advanced runner. The medium run is meant to build a strength base without placing too much stress on the musculoskeletal system or the runner's mental state. Generally speaking each week should include 2-3 medium distance runs.<br />
<br />
<b>Long-Distance Run</b><br />
A long distance run is considered to be anything over 90 minutes. For most runners, the long run should be twice the length of the runner's average medium run. There are times when the long run needs to exceed twice the medium run in order to best prepare for 26.2, but the longer runs should be prepared for gradually. A long run should be performed 2 to 3 times a month at conversational pace, unless it is an advanced runner. <br />

I mentioned at the beginning of last week that all of my activity this weekend would be recreational because I was having a girl friend visit and I wasn't lying! Carrie has never seen Eau Claire (not that there's much to see) so on Saturday we explored the downtown areas on foot. I showed her all the hot spots that J and I usually go to and pointed out the University. Our final destination was the farmers market...she was in for a treat because there were a lot of activities going on that aren't usually happening. We caroused around the market, bought some awesome salsa from the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chip-Magnet/220534001315063">Chip Magnet</a> (a local family makes their own salsa and sells it at the market)!</div>

After the market we headed across the street where they were having a mini carnival to promote all the new small businesses in the area. We checked everything out and even won a 8 oz cup of ice cream from Frogiyo Frozen Yogurt, Eau Claire's version of FroYo! Having them in town could be incredibly dangerous! I wish my camera would be working, because it was totally picture-worthy!</div>

On Sunday we took a walk to Starbucks where we both took advantage of the promo they had going on... buy a package of instant iced coffee and get any tall drink for free! I may have taken advantage of that twice this weekend, now I just need to try my new iced coffee to see if I like it!<br />

After we returned from our walk we dove into a new (to us) recipe that we found earlier... OMG so good!!! Thank you Skinny Taste!<br />

<i>Organic Hemp Protein Powder</i>- I have always wanted to try hemp protein powder, so this was exciting to find in my package. I wanted to try it with just water so I could get a feel for the true flavor so I mixed some with water...eh yuck! Don't try that, it tastes like grass. I think there was a reason they never suggested mixing with just water on the back of the package. So I blended some fruit into my water-hemp mix to make a smoothie. That helped make it a little more bearable, but I don't think I would purchase this product from the store... is their a vanilla or chocolate flavor? I'm still on the prowl for the perfect protein powder! </div>

I think this might be what heaven feels like. I am sure you have heard that not all calories are equal before. Well why is that? When you look at the nutrition label on the back of your food, you will notice three (among other items) important items recorded: protein, carbohydrates and fat. Each of these types of energy are measured in calories. Protein and carbohydrates each contain 4 calories per gram. Fat contains 9 calories per gram. (And just in case you're interested alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, even though it is not an essential nutrient.) The body uses these calories/nutrients to provide us with energy to perform everyday activities! </div>

The amount of calories a person needs to maintain weight depend on age, body weight, gender and <i>total energy expenditure </i>(TEE). TEE includes two main parts... <i>Resting energy expenditure </i>(REE), which is the amount of calories needed to maintain basic body systems and temperature at rest, and <i>activity energy expenditure </i>(AEE), which is the amount of calories used during exercise.<br />

Weight Maintenance: Calorie intake = TEE<br />
Weight Gain: Calorie intake > TEE<br />
Weight Loss: Calorie intake < TEE<br />

So let's take a look at how to find out your calorie needs...<br />

I had great hopes for my workouts this week, but I ended up really struggling with allergies/cold. J and I have been searching for a new futon for a while, so I said I'd take that. Then they asked if I'd like their coffee table, lamp and recliner... umm... sure! I'm super excited about the coffee table since we've been living with a coffee table that has a broken leg for a couple months now, not sure if we're lazy or just determined to make our current one work. I couldn't believe that everything they were willing to give me was something that we have been talking about needing! I asked them what they wanted for it all and they said nothing just take it, but I insisted they take something, so I offered them $50. All new furniture- in pretty darn good shape - for just $50!! I'm so excited! You know what I'll be working on this afternoon as soon as J gets home from work :-) </div>
